Fence Installation in Toronto

A Good Fence Changes the Whole Yard

Toronto lots sit close together, and you feel it: the neighbour's patio overlooks yours, the dog next door has opinions about your dog, and the yard never quite feels private. A solid wood privacy fence is the single fastest transformation a Toronto backyard can get — sightlines closed, noise softened, and a clear, safe boundary for kids and pets from the day it's finished.

But a fence is also the most unforgiving structure to build badly. A deck hides its frame; a fence shows everything — every post slightly out of line announces itself along the whole run. We build fences the slow, correct way: the line is set out and confirmed first, posts are dug below the frost line and set in concrete, and rails and boards are checked against the string at every section, so the finished fence runs straight and true from the house to the back lot line.

Fences We Build Across Toronto

  • Full-privacy board fences — overlapping or board-on-board patterns that leave no sight gaps as the wood seasons.
  • Lattice-top fences — a solid privacy body with a lattice crown that keeps light moving and adds a finished edge.
  • Horizontal-board fences — the modern look newer Toronto renovations ask for, with clean lines that suit contemporary homes.
  • Gates, single and double — framed, braced and hung on proper hardware so they swing true and latch in February, not just in July.
  • Metal fences — for front yards and pools, see our metal fence work on the main site.
Toronto Rules

Bylaw Height, Property Lines and Neighbours

Toronto regulates fences more than most homeowners expect. Under the city's fence bylaw, a residential backyard fence can generally be up to 2 metres (about 6 ft 7 in) high; front yards have lower limits, and corner lots carry extra rules where a fence could block the view of drivers and pedestrians. We check the rules against your lot before we quote — a fence built two inches too tall in the wrong spot is an expensive lesson.

Then there's the line itself. We build on the property line as it's marked — but if the line is genuinely unclear (old fences wander more often than you'd think), a survey is the honest way to settle it before anyone digs. And because most Toronto fences sit on shared boundaries, cost is usually a shared conversation too: neighbours commonly split the price of a line fence, and we're happy to quote the full run so both households see the same number.

How We Work

From String Line to Finished Gate

01

Measure & Quote

We walk the line with you, measure the full run, talk height, style and gates, and confirm the bylaw limits for your lot — then quote one exact price.

02

Line & Posts

The line is set out and confirmed, then posts are dug below the frost line and set in concrete — the step that decides whether a fence stands straight for decades.

03

Rails & Boards

Level rails and consistent boards, checked against the string at every section, with the pattern you chose — full privacy, lattice-top or horizontal.

04

Gates & Cleanup

Gates are framed, braced and hung last, swung and latched in front of you — and the site left tidy, with the old fence gone if we quoted its removal.

Pricing

Fence Pricing — Quoted Per Project, Honestly

A fence can't be priced from a chart the way a deck can: the real cost lives in the total length, the height, the style, how many gates you need, the slope of your lot, and whether an old fence has to come out first. So instead of a misleading per-foot teaser, we measure your actual line and give you one exact, fixed quote — free. No pressure, and the number doesn't move once we've given it.

Planning a deck on the same project? That's where our published rates apply: pressure-treated wood decks at $22–35 per sq ft, cedar at $25–38, and composite at $28–40, all installed. Fence and deck together are a natural pairing — one crew, one schedule, one finished backyard. Price the deck side instantly with the Deck Calculator.

Toronto Fence FAQ

Fence Questions Toronto Homeowners Ask

How tall can a backyard fence be in Toronto?
Toronto's fence bylaw generally allows residential backyard fences up to 2 metres (about 6 ft 7 in) high. Front-yard fences have lower limits, and corner lots have extra visibility rules where driveways and sidewalks meet. We confirm the limits for your specific lot before we quote, so the fence we build is the fence that's allowed.
Who pays for a fence on the property line?
On a shared boundary, neighbours commonly split the cost of a basic line fence — and Ontario's Line Fences Act exists for the cases where they can't agree. In practice, a friendly conversation first solves almost everything. We're glad to measure and quote the full run so you have a real number to share with your neighbour.
How long does fence installation take in Toronto?
For an average Toronto lot, plan on two to four days of work spread over a short window: posts are dug and set first, then rails and boards follow once the concrete has cured. Corner lots, slopes, gates and old-fence removal add time — your quote will lay out the expected schedule.
Can you remove our old fence as part of the job?
Ask us to include it: when we quote your fence, tell us about the existing one and we'll price removal and disposal of the old fence and posts into the same job, so the yard is never left open between tear-out and rebuild.
